چکیده

I propose to carry out a systematic investigation of planet harboring M dwarfs. Specifically, over the course of my thesis I will: i) develop and refine a new highprecision method of sub-millimagnitude “snapshot” photometry to help discover and investigate more transiting planets; ii) apply this method to differential spectroscopy; iii) calibrate existing M dwarf metallicity estimates with FGK stars to facilitate a proper comparison with the established correlation between the presence of one or more giant planets (MP > MJ) and the metallicity of the host star (known as the planet metallicity correlation or PMC) observed for F, G, and early K type stars; and iv) use these calibrated metallicity and Teff determinations on late K and M dwarfs in the Kepler field that harbor newly discovered transiting planets. Through this work I will be able to gain a better understanding of how planet size, number of planets, and other properties of the planetary system depend on metallically and other properties of the host star. Additionally, by focusing on late K and M dwarfs where the stellar convection zone is large, I will be able to avoid side-effects from metallicity ‘pollution’ by the planet forming disk, as well as quantify the likelihood of pollution based explanations for the observed giant planet PMC around FGK stars. 1. Models of very-low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and exoplanets

Within the next few years, GAIA and several instruments aiming to image extrasolar planets will be ready. In parallel, low-mass planets are being sought around red dwarfs, which offer more favourable conditions, for both radial velocity detection and transit studies, than solar-type stars. In this paper, the authors of a model atmosphere code that has allowed the detection of water vapour in th...

The Occurrence Rate of Small Planets around Small Stars

We use the optical and near-infrared photometry from the Kepler Input Catalog to provide improved estimates of the stellar characteristics of the smallest stars in the Kepler target list. We find 3897 dwarfs with temperatures below 4000K, including 64 planet candidate host stars orbited by 95 transiting planet candidates. We refit the transit events in the Kepler light curves for these planet c...

On the Metal-richness of M Dwarfs with Planets

Knowledge of the metallicities of M dwarfs rests predominantly on the photometric calibration of Bonfils and collaborators, which predicts that M dwarfs in the solar neighborhood, including those with known planets, are systematically metal-poor compared to their higher-mass counterparts. We test this prediction using a volume-limited sample of low-mass stars, together with a subset of M dwarfs...

Infrared Signatures of Disrupted Minor Planets at White Dwarfs

Spitzer Space Observatory IRAC and MIPS photometric observations are presented for 20 white dwarfs with Teff . 20, 000 K and metal-contaminated photospheres. A warm circumstellar disk is detected at GD 16 and likely at PG 1457−086, while the remaining targets fail to reveal mid-infrared excess typical of dust disks, including a number of heavily polluted stars. Extending previous studies, over ...

Towards a Deterministic Model of Planetary Formation. Iii. Mass Distribution of Short-period Planets around Stars of Various Masses

The origin of a recently discovered close-in Neptune-mass planet around GJ436 poses a challenge to the current theories of planet formation. Based on the sequential accretion hypothesis and the standard theory of gap formation and orbital migration, we show that around M dwarf stars, close-in Neptune-mass ice-giant planets may be relatively common, while close-in Jupiter-mass gas-giant planets ...
